The condition, also known as trichoptlosis, is a sign that hair fibers have become damaged. To treat unruly hair and restore healthy strands, consider embracing home remedies for split ends.

Causes of Split Ends

Split ends surface when locks are unhealthy and the protective component of hair suffers damage. A number of factors contribute to undesirable tresses, including exposure to extreme temperatures, poor nourishment, and a lack of moisture and natural oils. Hair products containing a lot of chemicals will also destroy hair ends. Other causes of split ends include harsh styling equipment (like curling irons), excessive sun exposure, and forceful brushing.

Split Ends Home Remedies

When hair starts to break or split, oftentimes only a decent trim does the trick. However, other remedies can restore healthy hair, repair some damage, and mask wayward strands. A few suggestions regarding home remedies for split ends include:

a) Honey:

Honey possesses moisturizing properties, which revamps dry hair and works towards preventing breakage. Add honey to your usual conditioner by pouring a small amount of conditioner into your hand alongside a tablespoon of honey. Blend the ingredients by running the palms of your hands together. Apply the mixture to your hair and leave on for 15 to 30 minutes. Use lukewarm water to rinse out the conditioner.

b) Honey and Olive Oil:

Mix equal parts of honey and olive oil to create a natural conditioner for your hair. Apply for 30 minutes and then rinse with warm water.

c) Banana and Avocado:

Condition your hair using avocados and bananas, which also adds body and shine to your tresses. Blend one soft banana and avocado with a couple tablespoons of olive oil until it reaches a smooth consistency. Apply the mixture after using your regular shampoo and leave in for 15 minutes. Rinse with lukewarm water.

d) Avoid Over-Styling:

Your hairstyling routine could be causing your split ends to worsen. Keep in mind that blow-drying, straightening, highlighting, and perming your hair on a regular basis can leave strands brittle, damaged and broken.

e) Gentle Brushing:

Use gentle strokes with a soft, flexible brush to style your hair. Avoid overbrushing.

f) Satin Pillow Case:

To minimize the tangles that can lead to split ends, sleep on a satin pillowcase.

g) Air Dry:

When drying your hair, avoid using styling equipment that produce high levels of heat, such as electric curlers, curling irons, and blow dryers.

h) Avoid Towels:

Drying your hair with a towel can actually cause breakage and split ends. Instead, air dry your hair. If a towel is a must, gently rub your tresses to prevent damage.

i) Eggs:

Tap into the power of essential fatty acids and vitamins found in egg yolks to create a decent conditioner for dry, damaged hair ends. Beat an egg together with one tablespoon of water. After wetting your hair, apply the egg mixture. Using your fingertips, rub the remedy into your scalp. Use cool water when rinsing out the mixture.

j) Mayonnaise:

When looking for a deep conditioner for your split ends, consider using mayonnaise when your regular conditioner isn’t doing the trick. Apply about ½ cup of mayonnaise to your hair and let sit for 15 minutes. If you have longer hair, you may need to use more mayonnaise. The best results come when you cover your hair with a shower cap or plastic wrap. Use shampoo to wash out the mayonnaise.

k) Scissors:

If you don’t want to commit to a professional trim, use a pair of scissors to snip the split ends that you see. It is suggested to go through your hair every six weeks to keep frayed ends manageable.

l) Olive Oil:

Heat a small amount of olive oil and use as a deep conditioner for damaged hair. Some people microwave their oil before massaging throughout their hair. Put on a shower cap and let the olive oil penetrate your hair for at least 30 minutes – followed by a careful rinsing.

speaking as a professionl stylist, you dont ever want to go through your hair with scissors yourself. the general public doesnt usually own a professional pair of shears and household scissors wont do the trick. plus you tend to get carried away and end of with a big whole in your hair and end up having to get it cut by a professional anyways. if you dont want to cut your hair because you want to grow it out, you must do monthly, weekly, or even bi-weekly treatments, depedning on the damage of your hair. and every 4-6 months get a trim! you must keep your hair healthy if you want it to be long, nothing is worse than long ugly hair.

If you’re using any hot styling tools, which face it, everyone does, make sure its ceramic. Also ask your stylist about products to put in your hair before blowdrying and one to put in before using a curling iron or flat iron. i recommend Moraccian(sp?) Oil and you can get it at most beauty supplies now. Dry your hair about 75% and then use a small amount, depedning on your hair length and density, rub together in your palms and disperse evenly throughout your hair starting with the ends up to the mid shaft. it helps to seal the cuticle of your hair and lock moisture in.
i myself have done everything under the sun to my hair and everytime i repair it, i use this and its amazing. its a nice lightweight leave in treatment that you can use everyday.

My hair was very dry and limp because I color my hair every 12 weeks and it was damaging my hair. I mixed best foods olive oil mayo with equal amount of olive oil applied it to wet dirty hair and covered it in plastic wrap and a towel and left it in for 30 minutes then I washed it out… the results were amazing and now I only have to do this once a month, or right before I color my hair. Try it it really works. Also if you color your hair use a sulfur free shampoo and conditioner.
