Home Remedies for Sore Throat

If one fine morning you find that swallowing hurts, be warned you are about to catch a cold or the flu. However, sore throat, known medically as pharyngitis, can also occur due to some other viral or bacterial infections. This infection has the dubious distinction of being one of the most common reasons for visiting a doctor. Almost 18 million sore throat sufferers do so annually in the US alone. Although most sore throats get cured by themselves in a week, it’s not always the case. This is where home remedies for sore throat come in handy!

Sore throat home remedy cures

You all are no stranger to sore throat. Since childhood you’ve been taking your grandma’s prescriptions to get rid of it. The good news is these time tested natural sore throat cures are still very much in use. They’re safe, effective and without any side effects. Let’s see what they are:

a. Slippery Elm bark (Ulmus rubra):

The inner bark of this tree contains mucilage, a gel-like substance that swells when it is mixed with water. Mucilage coats the throat and reduces irritation. The dried bark of this tree is taken as tea and helps to soothe sore throats and cough, if taken three to four times a day.

b. Licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra):

Licorice is also used as herbal tea and is an effective sore throat remedy. However, it shouldn’t be used by people with high blood pressure, heart, kidney or liver disease, pregnant or nursing women, or people on diuretics and blood pressure drugs.

c. Marshmallow (Althaea officinalis):

The root of this herb has been in use for centuries as a sore throat home remedy. It’s also taken as herbal tea and helps in sore throat relief. However, diabetics or those taking insulin injections should beware, as it can make your blood sugar low.

d. Honeysuckle flower:

This sweet-tasting and smelling herb is important in traditional Chinese medicine as a natural remedy for sore throat. The honeysuckle flowers are boiled and steeped, and taken orally. You can add honey to sweeten it. Drinking four cups a day will help alleviate sore throat symptoms.

e. Ginger tea (Zingiber officinale):

Ginger tea is a traditional cure for sore throat in almost all cultures and it’s effective too.

f. Salt and warm water:

This is a universal remedy for easing constant sore throat. All that needs to be done is to mix the salt in warm water until it dissolves and use it for gargling. It’s regular use makes the throat feel better.

g. Corn syrup:

Gargling with diluted corn syrup in warm water is also quite effective. It’s even safe if swallowed.

h. Apple cider vinegar:

Gargling with diluted apple cider vinegar kills the infection. You can also mix it with lemon, salt and honey, and take it orally. This will cure the sore throat problems.

i. Black pepper powder:

Black pepper powder mixed in warm water and used for gargling is an effective cure for sore throat.

j. Onion:

Finely chopped onion is put in a sealed container with some sugar. The juices released by the onion are then taken orally to cleanse the throat.

k. Tea tree oil and goldenseal:

Powdered goldenseal, mixed with a few drops of tea tree oil in hot water, is used for gargling for getting immediate relief.

l. Honey:

A teaspoon of honey helps ease the soreness of your throat in seconds.

Today, home remedies for this ailment have again become the preferred treatment that have the power of curing even severe forms of sore throat. But, whatever line of treatment you choose, consulting your physician is a must.

Honey works great, just a spoonful of it an swallow. If you’re like me, and can’t stand the taste of honey plain, you can dp it in a little powdered confectioners sugar. An old remedy of my dads is to gargle with warm water and baking soda. Since its finer and stronger that table salt, it works better. Also,it wont sctatch up your throat. But tastes nastier than salt (not that they arn’t both pretty bad!!!).

My son had a bad sore throat this morning and I could not give him any medicine because he was sick to his stomach. I tried one of the Home Remedies I read on the Earth Clinic website…it worked instantly!! Thank you Jesus!! I cannot stand for my children to feel bad and I really do not like to give them a lot of over-the-counter meds, but this was great. It did not cost me a dime, I already had some in the house.

Squeeze a lemon to make it nice and juicy. Cut an end off, about one inch. Bite the ends off of a cheap peppermint stick, and put it into the lemon. Use the peppermint stick as a straw. sucking on it will create a tiny little hollowing in the peppermint stick that will get larger the more lemon juice you drink. If the peppermint stick is stubborn and won’t act as a straw, squeeze the lemon juice into a cup, heat it up, and melt a peppermint into it – drink and enjoy relief. Kids often like this one, too.

Grandma’s secret. Purchase any tea of your prefrence (Herbal honey tea’s are best to me) add 1tsp of honey after heating tea. Then add( 2 Halls) cough drops and stir till cough drop breaks down from a solid to a liquid. Becareful because the cough drops may stick to the bottom of the cup presenting some resistence when trying to stir. The medicine in the cough drop will give you a coolness relief when finished and the honey as we all know will back the cooling effect by coating. Hope this works for all those who are “Sick” of having a sore throat:) God Bless

i am a russian so there is a remedy for us just take vodka, honey and butter and heat it really good together so that you can swallow it the vodka kills the bacteria the honey helps make it less of a burning feeling in your throat and the butter is so that if you have a really dry throat it will moisturize your throat. i hope this works because it did for me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! plus it doesn’t taste that bad like other medicines you have to take for your throat.
