Home Remedies for Rheumatism

What is Rheumatism?

Rheumatism refers to any disease or disorder involving joints, muscles, tendons and bones that can cause pain and weakness [1]. The most common rheumatic conditions include rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, gout, septic arthritis, and psoriatic arthritis. Rheumatic fever, which is a complication of strep throat, is another condition that can turn serious because it causes damage to the heart. A form of rheumatism that tends to affect the soft tissues that causes pain throughout the body is referred to as non-articular rheumatism. Conditions, such as tendonitis, fibromyalgia, and bursitis, fall into this category.

Causes and Symptoms

The kinds of foods you eat can lead to rheumatism, such as consuming too many fatty foods. Eating too many acid-forming foods is another common culprit of rheumatic conditions. Eating de-mineralized starch and red meat on a daily basis can cause rheumatism symptoms. Other causes include your family tree, hormonal imbalances, processed foods, and artificial additives.

Depending on the cause of your rheumatism condition, you could experience the following symptoms: fever, intense soreness, swelling, stiff muscles, body pain, joint pain, pain felt in eyes, trouble sleeping, and improper urination. In the worst cases, some people can fall into a coma.

Rheumatism Home Remedies

When the pain and weakness in your limbs and joints get too much to handle, it is suggested to become familiar with home remedies for rheumatism. To treat the symptoms of rheumatic conditions, consider the following recommended treatments:

a) Onions:

Chop up three unpeeled onions and boil in one pint of water to create a healing drink for your rheumatism symptoms.

b) Walnuts:

Since walnuts assist in strengthening bones, it is suggested to eat five to six walnuts daily. Make sure to carefully chew the nuts.

c) Chilies and Peppers:

The capsaicin found in chilies and peppers delivers an active component that desensitizes the nerves and helps control pain. Use as a pain reliever for rheumatic conditions.

d) Epsom Salts:

Add Epsom salts to a hot bath for a soak that can ease your pain.

e) Dried Mustard:

Some people have mixed a spoonful of dried mustard to their bathwater for a healing soak. A substitute for this home remedy is cayenne pepper.

f) Celery:

It is said that the liquid extract of celery seeds is a more potent home treatment for rheumatism than using the raw vegetable. Consume five to ten drops of the extract added to hot water – taken before eating your meals. Powdered seeds also make a healing condiment for your foods.

g) Avoid Red Meat:

Limit the amount of red meat you consume, as the body produces uric acid after eating such foods. This acid makes muscular and joint pain worse.

h) Tomatoes:

The juice of tomatoes can treat rheumatism pains associated with the hands and legs. Consume raw tomatoes or drink the juice. To see results, eat four to five tomatoes per day.

i) Garlic:

Prepare a garlic paste and directly apply to affected painful joints.

j) Molasses and Cranberry Juice:

Add four teaspoons of blackstrap molasses to one quart of cranberry juice. Drink one glass every day to treat rheumatism symptoms.

k) Rhubarb:

Pound the green stalks of rhubarb with an equal amount of sugar. Take a teaspoonful of the remedy three to four times per day to treat symptoms of rheumatism.

l) Potato:

Create an extract from the juice of raw potatoes. Take two to three teaspoons of the potato juice two or three times per day. Continue taking this remedy for at least one month. The components of the potato work towards easing the effects of an acidic medical condition associated with worsening the symptoms of rheumatism.

m) Carrots and Lemon:

Add one to two teaspoons of lemon extract to a glass of fresh carrot juice. Drink two to three times per day.

n) Cod Liver Oil:

Known for encouraging strong, healthy bones, take two to three teaspoons of cod liver oil added to a glass of orange juice to fight the symptoms of rheumatism. This home remedy should be taken at night before going to bed.

o) Apple Cider Vinegar:

Add two to three teaspoons each of vinegar and honey to a glass of lukewarm water. Consume this blend once or twice per day for at least a month to see results.
