Home Remedies for Jaundice

Jaundice is a symptom that some parents know all too well – a common occurrence in newborn babies that typically clears up without any treatment. However, in adults, jaundice could indicate something more serious, such as damage to the liver. When left untreated, jaundice in adults can lead to liver failure. Luckily, home remedies for jaundice can help lessen the amount of time that symptoms remain visible.

What is Jaundice?

Jaundice is not a sickness, but a medical condition associated when a high amount of a compound called bilirubin is in a system. Bilirubin is made when hemoglobin from red blood cells breaks down and then circulates in the blood. The extra bilirubin causes the skin, eyes, and mucus membranes in the mouth to yellow in color [1]. Anyone can be affected by jaundice – from newborn babies to adults.

Causes and Symptoms

Three forms of jaundice exist – obstructive, hepatocellular, and hemolytic.

• Obstructive jaundice develops when the bile duct becomes blocked (gall stones, tumors, or cancer), which prevents bile from reaching the intestines.

• Hepatocellular jaundice emerges when liver cells become damaged or affected by disease, are do not process bilirubin. The excess is left to accumulate in the blood stream. Hepatitis, cirrhosis, pancreatic cancer, decreased blood flow to the liver, congenital disorders, and malaria (an infection that can destroy red blood cells) are common culprits.

• Hemolytic jaundice causes high bilirubin levels in the blood due to hemolysis – the abnormal breakdown of red blood cells. This type of jaundice often affects newborn babies – generally from an underdeveloped liver. Symptoms can arise between two to five days after birth. Jaundice actually appears in more than half of all babies born because their immature liver is unable to process the excess bilirubib left behind by fetal red blood cells that have been replaced with blood cells similar to an adult.

Symptoms of jaundice include a yellow, orange, or greenish discoloration of the skin, whites of the eyes, mucous membranes, and bodily fluids associated with the accumulation of bile pigment. Itching (called prutitis) can reach severe levels and cause a patient to scratch until sores form. A patient may also experience pale brown feces.
