Soapy water in a dish or pan does kill 'em quick. The perfect dishes are from the Simply Asia microwave lunches. I ate these all the time for lunch at work. The empty dishes are just the right size, and apparently transparent to infrared.

I fill the dishes 3/4 full of water, add half a squirt of liquid hand soap in the bathroom, and keep them near my desk where I work. If i catch a flea on my foot, I grab it and flick it into the water, and laugh as they struggle against certain death, which pleases the evil madman in me.

Without a lamp involved, I can catch 10-20 per hour, at the cost of distraction every time a feel a tickle on my leg. With a compact flourescent desk lamp, adjusted for the bulb to be about 8 to 9 inches above the floor, centered over the dish, the li'l bastards happily commit suicide! Maybe 20-30 in the last hour, and fewer jumping on me, and that higher kill rate takes no effort. I haven't tried incandescent bulbs, but suspect they'd be too hot to work as effectively.

Of course this merely reduces the population of active adult fleas. I'm going to try borax on the carpets soon for a longer-term solution.

Although it may seem a little messy inside the home, banana peels repell fleas. They can be shredded and put in the grass or flower beds around the outside of your residence. They do not like the fragrance or consistency of banana peels.
As for treating carpets for fleas, in addition to borax from the pharmacy department, you can use Twenty Team Borax laundry detergent booster. Sprinkle it generously yet as evenly as possible across the carpet and let it stay there overnight. Vacuum the next day and either discard the bag or clean out the canister when you are finished.
